Each summer, Hawai‘i gathers to celebrate one of its most beloved cultural traditions: hula. And there’s no better place to witness the depth and beauty of this art form than at the Prince Lot Hula Festival, an annual event that brings halau (hula schools) from across the islands together to share mele, movement, and mana in a setting that honors the past and uplifts the present.
Held in July, the Prince Lot Hula Festival is the largest non-competitive hula event in Hawai‘i, originally founded in 1978 to honor Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, who later became King Kamehameha V, for his role in helping to preserve hula during a time when public performances were banned. His legacy lives on through this gathering, where traditional and contemporary hula are both celebrated with deep respect.
